This TLILIC0016Licence to operate a bridge and gantry crane specifies the skills and knowledge required to operate bridge cranes and gantry cranes safely. Competence in this unit, does not in itself result in a High-Risk Work Licence (HRWL) to operate this plant.

A bridge crane is a crane with a bridge beam or beams on end carriages, moving along elevated runways, and featuring a traversing hoisting mechanism. A gantry crane has a bridge beam supported by legs on end carriages, travels on surfaces or decks, and includes a crab with hoisting units.

This unit covers operating bridge or gantry cranes controlled from a cabin/control station or remotely with more than three powered operations. Students will attain the theoretical knowledge and the practical application to operate a bridge and gantry crane properly and will be able to:

  1. Plan Work/Task: Identify requirements, inspect work area, assess operating surface, determine crane capacity and load limits, apply hazard control measures, follow traffic plans, establish communication, and confirm task details.
  2. Prepare for Work/Task: Consult with personnel, implement risk control measures, access and check crane, set up and rig crane properly, perform operational checks, inspect crane logbook, assess weather conditions, calculate load weight, select lifting points and gear, and prepare load destination.
  3. Perform Work/Task: Ensure lifts are within crane capacity, position hook block, connect and use lifting gear safely, carry out test lift, transfer loads following procedures, monitor crane movements, follow communication signals, lower and land load safely, and prepare gear for next task.
  4. Pack Up: Park and secure crane, stow gear, apply locks and brakes, shut down crane securely, and conduct post-operational checks.

  5. Wear steel cap shoes/boots and remove all jewellery prior to commencement

A High Risk Work Licence (HRWL) is a photographic licence, issued to people who have been trained and assessed as competent to work in a class of work defined as high-risk work.

Here’s What You Need to Know:

  • Licence Applications:
    • Saferight does not handle HRWL applications for individual bookings and group bookings via credit card payment. During your training, we will only equip you with all the essential information and paperwork needed to apply for your High Risk Work Licence (HRWL) directly with WorkSafe WA.
    • Saferight only offers HRWL applications exclusive to corporate bookings made through the “Approved Purchase Order Payment Companies” portal.
  • Passport Photo Service:
    • Saferight provides a passport photo service for a fee of $20 (not included in the course fee). This service produces a set of 6 passport photos required for your HRWL application, available during your training period.
      • For students who enrolled through individual bookings and group bookings via credit card payment, you can request this service at the reception.
      • For students enrolled through company bookings via “Approved Purchase Order Payment Companies” portal, the option to add this service is available during the online enrolment process. Companies interested in this extra option MUST inform their enrolled students to get their photos at reception.
